Asparagrass Steamer- A Good Choice

by Robin Holland-Smith

Stellar and Judge's asparagus steamer is perfect for lightly steaming both asparagus and whole corn. Since it is narrow and long, the items stand up while being steamed, so they are always heating evenly. The steamer features a shiny finish on both sides, and its stainless steel handles are fastened on with rivets. It has a removable basket and a very large pot underneath. Its tempered glass cover has vents, and the entire steamer can be cleaned in your dishwasher.

If you are looking for professional cookware that is made at the highest standards, then you should consider Stellar and Judge Cookware. This cookware is made with 18/10 stainless steel in order to provide durability and stain resistance.

When you bring your new cookware home, peel off the labels, wash them in hot sudsy water, then rinse and dry. You should also pre-condition appliances with non-stick surfaces by coating them with cooking oil and wiping dry. Copper pans need special care, as they are coated in the factory with a substance to prevent tarnish - to remove the coating, boil water in the pan. As it heats up, the coating will evaporate away. Your copper pans will then be ready for normal use and require no more special care. Using a product like Stellar Copper Cleaner can keep your copper pans looking like new.

One always cooks asparagus before eating it. It is generally cooked by boiling or steaming, although it is excellent as an ingredient in Chinese stir-fry recipes. Try it with butter and a squeeze of lemon, or tossed with Parmesan cheese, or with a pasta in cream sauce. Eat it alone with a marinade or, heated or not, as part of a salad. It complements both meats and fowl wonderfully.

The stalks have tough and woody ends, which will snap off with the use of a little pressure. However, many people prefer to leave most of this intact and simply peel the tough skin off of the lower part. If you find yourself with leftover trimmings, they can be blanched and frozen to be used later - perhaps in a stock or soup. For tasty asparagus, the key is to cook it to the point of tenderness where it can be pierced with a fork. This usually only takes about ten minutes.

Never overcook asparagus, since that will lead to it losing its flavor and nutrient value. Make sure you use a non-iron skillet when you boil it, and use salt water in the pot. Another helpful tip is to tie the stalks together to make cooking asparagus easier and simpler to remove when it's done.

Do you cook asparagus a lot? If you do, you'll want to invest in a specialty asparagus steamer. These steamers are tall and thin with a basket-type insert. With the ability to put the asparagus upright in the basket with the tips out of the water, you can soften the tough stem in the water while the delicate tips are only softened by the steam. Some vegetables require special cooking pots due to their unusual shape. Corn and asparagus, both long vegetables, cook best in an elongated pot. Stellar and Judge make a stainless steel Asparagrass Steamer that allows the vegetables to steam in the up right position.
