BMW Modding On A Budget

by Rand Stuck

For most car nuts, once they purchase a new vehicle, that is only the start of an extensive and often expensive process of tuning to get improved BMW performance. There are literally hundreds of different decisions on how you accomplish this. Where does one start, what can be done by the average backyard mechanic and what needs pro help? Also, where can you purchase quality parts at the best price? Sourcing parts is the part of tuning that you have considerable control over and where you can save the most time and money, if done correctly.

Now, there is more than one school of thought on this issue. For BMWs, a lot of design and engineering was completed by the factory to make a world class car that is typically a better performer than many of its peers. It is way too easy to whind up heading backwards in your search for speed by purchasing inferior parts, installing them incorrectly or not matching up the performance levels of different systems on your vehicle. In fact, BMW itself is producing an ever growing line of its own aftermarket performance parts so you can be confident of the same quality and engineering in these parts as the rest of your car. The negative side is these parts are frequently more expensive than their non-BMW counterparts.

So, how can you purchase quality parts for your BMW? I am a huge believer of doing research online using a variety of tools. There are many exceptional forums out there consisting of many thousands of BMW owners. With a little work you can frequently find a member with your exact BMW who has already done similar modifications to their BMW and can frequently provide some valuable information on what works, which retailer has the best price, install hints and more. A few of of my favorites are bimmerforums, e46fanatics and roadfly.org. Time invested here can easily save you a lot of cost and frustration so you don't have to repeat the mistakes of others.

Another great source that is frequently overlooked is eBay. The choices can be overwhelming and there are many cheaply made, knock-off parts that you should try to stay away from. If you purchase from a known seller with good feedback and do your research on the part you require and at what price, you can really extend your tuning budget. You can purchase new parts, OEM BMW parts and used BMW parts quickly and easily to make your tuning project a success.
