A Brief History of Tattoos

by ted tedlinger

Tattoos have been in existence since man lived in caves. So have thoughts of tattoo removal. World wide, cultures have been marking themselves for centuries to show everything from status to tribal affiliation.Entire body tattoos covered many ancient heroes of Japan. Some of those ancient designs are still used today by Japanese gangsters.

Tattooing became popular in 18th century Europe following the exploits of Captain James Cook. After several periods of rising and falling popularity, tattooing has made a comeback as a popular form of body decoration to show individuality or to indicate an affiliation of one kind or another. As many as twenty five million people have a tattoo in 21st century America.

Injecting a pigment under the skin forms a tattoo. Ancient Japanese punctured the skin with bamboo shoots to allow the pigment to enter the skin and form the tattoo. Modern tattoo guns pierce the skin to a precise depth under the skin. The pigment enters the skin and is deposited.

Modern tattoo ink contains pigment in an alcohol based solution. The ink is considered a food additive by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and adverse reactions to the ink are minimal. Usually, foreign bodies are attacked and removed by the body's natural defense mechanism, but the particles of tattoo pigment are too large to be removed by the immune system.

There are many reasons for people to get tattoos. Some get them due to peer pressure. Others as a show affection. Many just feel better about themselves when they get their tattoo.

There can be problems with tattoos. Some people have the misfortune of having the artist make a mistake on their design. Sometimes both design and artistic quality are not up to par. Also, there is the problem of the amateur tattoo. This work usually ends bad.

Sometimes a tattoo put on 20 years and 30 pounds ago doesn't look so good. A new job sometimes inspires the need for removal. People regret getting a tattoo for many reasons. Removal is sometimes the only option and the various practical methods, i.e., laser, tca products, removal creams, dermabrasion and incision must be studied.
