Freeware Games : Satisfaction For Computer Games Fans

by Aiden Zamora

If you are old enough to remember the dawn of video games, particularly old arcade games, then you might be surprised that they are not relegated to the past. Modern computers are more then capable of playing those classics. Even better, much of the old software has become freeware games or been abandoned. That means that you can enjoy them, and find new fun from the era without cost.

Some of the old arcade games have become freeware over time. Freeware allows completely free play without the worry of a purchase, since the game designers have allowed these older games to enter the public domain for all of us to enjoy. With freeware games, donations are sometimes encouraged to help cover the cost of the game's development, but are not always necessary.

Many other games may seem like freeware, but they are actually "trialware". Trialware allows you to use the software for a short period of time, sometimes a 30 or 60 day period, without paying. After this period is over, you must either pay for the software or stop using it. This gives you a chance to try a game for a while and decide if you like it.

Abandonware is another type of gaming software. These programs are in a legally gray area. The programs are old and have been left by the manufacturers. Perhaps the company does not even exist any more. Most times, you can download these programs and play the games for no cost, without worrying about doing something illegal.

There are lots of other games to play for free online since they are supported by in game advertisements. Usually, an online company has bought the rights to these games and offers them for play in exchange for advertising revenue. Multiplayer online games are usually available in this manner, especially adventure online games.

Gamers don't have to spend tons of money just to play their favorite games---especially those considered to be classics. A good majority of these games are available for free. And people are discovering that even more games are being released free to the public. Some are offered through the support of ads. Therefore there is no good reason to spend lots of money on games, when they can be enjoyed for free.

If you really enjoy playing old arcade games on your computer, you'll be happy to know that there are websites where you can play many of your old favorite adventure online games. There is an important difference between freeware games and trialware. Trialware lets someone play the game for a limited amount of time before the user is expected to pay for the program. Another category is known as Abandonware software, software that is so old that it has been abandoned by its makers. In fact, many times the company involved is no longer in business. It is possible to download abandonware without any legal repercussions.
