Home Security Door Lock To Prevent Criminal Activity

by Rex Freiberger

Are you looking to improve the safety of your property? There are many high-tech monitoring and alarm systems available but the first simple step should be to consider a well made home security door lock. A home security door lock should go beyond a simple knob and key entry mechanism, as these are easily foiled by burglars.

The best type of home security lock is known as the dead-bolt. Dead-bolts go beyond the simple spring-pressured mechanism that an ordinary lock has, which will create a vast improvement in the security of your doors. Most locks that are of the knob variety can be easily opened by taking the pressure off the spring. A burglar would have to tear the entire lock out of the door in order to get past a dead-bolt.

What makes a dead-bolt work? A dead bolt is home security door look that uses a steel bar that juts out from the lock cylinder into the door jamb. The lock's cylinder needs cycling for the bar to leave the door jamb and allow the door to open. This helps secure the door from forced entry and skilled lock pickers.

A front door lock with a good dead bolt comes with many options and different varieties. Some of these locks are turned vertically to make a forced entry more difficult. Some may have multiple cylinders that you use 2 keys to work. When you use a double lock you make the house especially secure.

Burglary is a very common crime in our society. Even people living in areas where there is a low crime rate need to put dead bolts on their doors. Even if you never need them, dead bolts are an inexpensive way to enhance your personal safety and that of your family members. In addition, you won't have to worry about the possibility of someone breaking in while you sleep.

If you've never had a deadbolt on your door, there will be some labor involved with its installation. You will need to drill a large hole for the lock placement directly above the doorknob and another smaller hole in the side of the door. You will also need to drill holes in the jamb for the lock "throw" to fit into. Another style of deadbolt is available that is installed only on the inside of the door to provide extra security when people are in the house. Whichever style of home security door lock you choose, it will provide an inexpensive yet effective extra layer of safety for your home.

Improving the security of your property requires investing in a good home security door lock. Regular locks are easy for burglars to pick. For maximum protection, you should install a deadbolt, which is an excellent home security lock. A deadbolt offers much more security than a regular lock. A deadbolt has a piece of steel which protrudes from the lock, goes through the door, and embeds itself at least an inch into the doorjamb. Deadbolts come in many different styles. If you don't already have a deadbolt as a front door lock, installing one can be labor-intensive. However, it is certainly worth the expense.
